These charming stuffed animal toys are handcrafted in the central highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. The poorest state in the country, Chiapas also boasts the 3 largest hydroelectric dams; yet most of the state's inhabitants live without electricity or running water. Despite this extreme poverty, Chiapas is rich in indigenous culture, natural beauty and ancestral crafts.
Weaving and embroidering textiles is a tradition in this region that descends from the ancient Maya. The production of these toys encourages the continuation of long-established hand-weaving techniques, while creating a unique source of income for dozens of women. Each toy is distinctive, and made with natural, hand-spun wool shorn from local, sustainably raised sheep. These products are purchased directly from the women who create them, ensuring that they receive a fair price for their work. This has led to personal and financial independence and improved quality of life for the women involved in this project, as well as their entire families. Thank you for supporting positive economic trade!
